I’ve just had an intern, Maisie, with me for a week — and she was absolutely inspiring.
She left me buzzing with new ideas and boundless motivation to put them into action.
There’s something about seeing the world through fresh eyes again — the questions, the curiosity, the courage to say, “why do we do it that way?”
It’s a reminder that learning never stops. That energy, that willingness to try things, to experiment, to figure it out as you go — it’s contagious.
Having an intern isn’t just about teaching.
It’s about rediscovering what you love about what you do.
It’s about being challenged, in the best way.
And it’s about remembering that enthusiasm and initiative beat “experience” more often than we like to admit.
Fresh Eyes See Things Differently
It’s easy to get comfortable in our routines. We know what works, we’ve got our systems, and we move fast.
Then an intern shows up and asks, “Why do we do it that way?”
That one simple question can stop you in your tracks. Sometimes the answer is solid — because it works. But other times… it sparks a conversation, an idea, or even a change that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
Interns see things from the outside in — and that’s a powerful advantage. They spot gaps, challenge assumptions, and remind us that innovation often starts with curiosity.
Learning Works Both Ways
Mentoring an intern isn’t just about teaching them what you know — it’s about rediscovering how you learned it.
Explaining your process forces you to think about your own approach, your decision-making, and even your communication style. You realize what’s instinctive, what’s intentional, and what might need a rethink.
And in that process, you grow too.
It’s easy to forget how exciting your field can be when you’re deep in the day-to-day. But when an intern lights up over something you’ve done a thousand times before — it reignites your own enthusiasm.
Energy Is Contagious
There’s something about the pace, optimism, and ambition of someone just starting out that lifts everyone around them.
Their curiosity fuels creativity. Their drive inspires momentum. Their questions lead to better answers.
And when you see that spark — that mix of nervousness and excitement — you remember what it felt like to be at the beginning of your own journey. It’s grounding, humbling, and energizing all at once.
The Ripple Effect
An intern’s impact often stretches further than you’d expect.
They might come in for a few weeks or a summer project, but their influence can linger — in the ideas they sparked, the workflows they questioned, or even the new energy they brought to the culture.
It’s a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t just about experience. It’s about energy, empathy, and the ability to inspire others to think differently.
Stay Curious
Maisie reminded me of something simple but powerful: curiosity is a superpower.
It fuels creativity, drives innovation, and keeps your work — and your mindset — alive.
So here’s to the next generation of thinkers, doers, and innovators — and to the joy of seeing our work through their eyes.
Fresh perspective.
New energy.
Endless ideas.
Let’s stay curious.
